Michael Cartwright

Michael Cartwright
Dr. Cartwright is a physician in the Department of Neurology, with expertise in neuromuscular disorders.  He sees patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), muscular dystrophy, polyneuropathy, Guillain-Barre syndrome, myasthenia gravis, and other neuromuscular conditions.  His main research interest is in peripheral nerve and muscle imaging in neuromuscular conditions, and the majority of his research uses high-resolution ultrasound to image nerve and muscle.  He is also involved in projects to explore the earliest changes in ALS, to develop biomarkers for patients with ALS, clinical treatment trials for ALS, and to design treatments for muscular dystrophy.

Translational studies in humans and the mouse model of ALS to determine the earliest detectable changes in the disease. Carpal tunnel syndrome in Latino poultry workers: documentation of incidence and prevalence and determination of factors predicting the development of carpal tunnel syndrome. Neuromuscular ultrasound in focal neuropathies: using ultrasound to improve diagnosis and treatment of nerve conditions. Treatment trials in ALS: involved in several clinical trials to assess potential ALS treatments. Neuromuscular ultrasound to assess critical illness polyneuromyopathy. Neuromuscular ultrasound in extremes of age, height, and weight.
