My research is focused on understanding the neurochemical mechanisms that support the reinforcing and motivating actions of abused drugs and lead to the development of addiction. My particular emphasis is how drugs of abuse induce changes in the delicate equilibrium between synaptic processes such as release, reuptake and synthesis of brain neurotransmitters in response to acute and repeated drug exposure. I am currently focused on the dysregulation of these neurochemical events in the mesolimbic and nigrostriatal dopamine systems during drug addiction. My primary objective is to combine cutting edge molecular and genetic techniques with sophisticated neurochemical approaches to understand how abused drugs dysregulate neurotransmission.
