A favorite instrument in the orchestra, a familiar voice in a crowd of people, or the still of a forest floor and then, suddenly, a snapping twig. What mechanisms of our central nervous system draw our attention to these sounds and separate them for analysis or allow them to take control of our behavior? What is the role of early auditory experience in shaping these responses? and perhaps more importantly, what plastic changes in growing brain connections may occur when hearing is disturbed in childhood as it may be with chronic middle ear infections? The approach of our laboratory has been to use modern neuroanatomical techniques to visualize, reconstruct and analyze the development and organization of complex auditory circuits.
