Barry Stein
A fundamental property of the brain is an ability to integrate information from different senses. This is essential for normal perception and behavior. But - how does the brain manage to do this given that each sense has its own peripheral organ, and that organ projects to a dedicated area of the brain? Furthermore, what experiences during early life facilitate the development of this capacity? In dealing with these issues, we record from individual neurons in a cortical-midbrain circuit that have been identified as receiving indirect inputs from different senses (they are multisensory) and that underlie the ability to detect and localize external events.  Using animal model systems at different levels of the neuraxis, we examine the rules underlying this multisensory process; how they are expressed in single neurons; the developmental antecedents essential for their maturation; and their impact on perception and behavior. The objective is to use information in a bench-to-bedside fashion to develop interventional and rehabilitative strategies to compensate for developmental, disease-, and/or trauma-induced disruptions in this processes that substantially degrade normal perception and behavior.
